The IPL And It's Possible Impact On Indian Football

By Prashanth
Indian Premier League (IPL) launched by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to become the costliest competition in Indian sports. A few days earlier, it was Force India which made it to the headlines for the right reasons. In days to come before the Commonwealth Games 2010, India will set foundation stones for many sports properties and thus reflect the confidence of the current Indian sporting scenario.

The present condition of sports in India allows cricket to consolidate its position firmly due to the absence of any strong competitor. The plot of IPL is pretty similar to the American Football Scenario in the US were millionaires are invited to buy franchises of the NFL teams. Whether the IPL would be a success or not would be seen once the season ends.

But the real question lies whether the IPL is good or bad for Indian Football? Definitely due to the advent of the IPL, the sporting culture in India is all set to change. It is true that IPL may not help Indian football directly but who knows whether the emergence of professional sporting culture due to the IPL might just benefit the beautiful game.

The list franchisee owners of IPL boast of corporate tycoons like Dr.Vijay Mallya and Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan, who are known to be very passionate about football. We also have to note that there were few corporate bigwigs who had failed in their attempt to get the ownership rights of an IPL team. They do have football as an option for investment due to the strong club culture present in Indian football.

Football in India is already attracting fresh corporate interests and with more than a billion people living in India, we have the option to have a multi-sport industry in our country. The immediate need of the hour is for the football clubs to attain professionalism.
